General Health Advice

This site has a health encyclopaedia, which covers a wide range of conditions and illnesses. It has a self-help section for people who don't feel well - so they can look up their symptoms to see what may be wrong with them. It contains advice for healthy living e.g. balanced diets, smoking cessation tips, information about the NHS. There is a section about childhood immunisations - this covers information, frequently asked questions and a discussion forum.

Immunisation

UVIG - www.uvig.org
This website aims to promote the positive benefits of vaccination, and represents the UK vaccine industry. There are various sections including detailed descriptions about the production and safety of vaccines. There are also sections about illness / diseases, which are currently vaccinated against - there is a large section on pneumococcal disease.

Immunisation - www.immunisation.nhs.uk
This is a Department of Health site aimed at providing clear information on those diseases that are currently vaccinated against. It has sections on the diseases themselves, the vaccinations for those diseases and immunisation information for travellers.

The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) is an independent expert advisory committee to the Department of Health first set up in 1963. It's terms of reference are to advise the Secretaries of State for Health for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland on matters relating to communicable diseases, preventable and potentially preventable through immunisation.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has developed a number of resources to help health care professionals in their immunisation training. The National Minimum Standards for Immunisation Training and accompanying Core Curriculum were developed by an advisory group led by the Centre for Infection's Immunisation Department as one of a range of initiatives to support the education of those undertaking immunisation delivery at a local level. The aim of these National Standards is to ensure consistency in the training provided across the country and to aid those responsible for providing training
