About Wyeth Vaccines

For many years, Wyeth has been a leader in vaccine development, helping prevent life threatening diseases, and contributing to the eradication of smallpox. By working together with governments and associated agencies, Wyeth Vaccines continues to make a significant contribution to public health both globally and here in the UK.

Most recently, Wyeth has been at the forefront in developing conjugate vaccines to help protect against some of the leading bacterial causes of meningitis and septicaemia, such as Hib (Haemophilus influenzae type b), meningitis C (Neisseria meningitidis type C), and the pneumococcus (Streptococcus pneumoniae).

Hib disease, once a leading cause of bacterial meningitis in infants and young children, has been substantially reduced since the introduction of routine vaccination in the UK in 1992 (Immunisation against Infectious Disease, Chapter 16). Following the inclusion of vaccination against meningitis C in the national immunisation programme in 1999, the UK has observed a similar reduction in the incidence of this form of bacterial meningitis and septicaemia [DoH 2005].

Wyeth has developed a conjugate vaccine against pneumococcal disease, another leading cause of bacterial meningitis and serious infections in infants and young children. The vaccine has now been incorporated into the UK routine childhood immunisation programme, where it is expected to save lives and prevent disability caused by this serious infection.
